We have trained our customers pretty well to hang up on scammers immediately, who claim to be Microsoft/HP/Dell… professionals that request to log in to their computer to fix it. Did you know that you could also end up calling the scammers yourself? Most of us search online to get the phone number of companies and end up on the wrong site. Here are some tips on how to determine a true website from an amateur one.
1) Look at the url. For eg, HP website should most likely be www.hp.com. If it is myhp.com, hpforyou.com,
hp.fixpc.com etc. or has other unusual characters or misspellings, stay away from it.
2) When searching online, the list of the search results with the letters AD next to the site name are advertising
sites which are not always illegitimate, but you may end up on the wrong site if you click on one of those.
3) Sites starting with https are secured compared to those starting with http (without an ”s” at the end)
4) You can use this website to determin if a site is safe. Simply paste the url of the website and see the result. https://transparencyreport.google.com/safe-browsing/search
At times, the scammers will disguise themselves to be from a local neighborhood computer store!! These are the very smart ones – I suggest its always best to hang up and if in doubt, call back that store with a trusted number you have written down. Remember – when in doubt, hang up!
